The July 2020 Long Range Muzzle Loading Hunter Match

July 25-26 marked the second “Long Range Muzzle Loading Hunter Match” here at NMLRA headquarters in Friendship, Indiana.

Marksmen began arriving Friday night to get their gear sighted in on the NMLRA range. Some shooters remarked that our range behaves unlike any other range as they dialed in their scopes for expected crosswinds.

How Patches affect your Roundball Shooting | Muzzle Loading Tips

Many black powder rifles, regardless of cost or craftsmanship, are quite inaccurate. Not because they are made wrong, but because the owner doesn't know what makes it accurate and therefore experiments in ignorance.

A Weekend with the Longhunters of Western Indiana | Muzzle Blasts on the Road

We were invited out for a small camp and shoot this weekend by Eli Froedge and Jason Jacobs. It was a great weekend of black powder and fellowship.

The following is shared from camp organizer Jason Jacobs,

‘A little preview of our camp/shoot, last weekend. We had 17 camps and 22 shooters. We had shooters from five states. Great time had by all. Lots of shooting; 20 shot rifle course, 20 shot smooth bore course, 10 shot pistol course, 14 block hawk and knife course, long range rifle match, clay bird shoot, candle shoot and a clatch match. Winner on the clatch match was 53, IIRC. Long range match started at 80 yards and ended at 140 yards on a 12 inch steel plate. Two tables full of awesome food and a 29 pound ham on the spit.‘

On Creating a Muzzle Loading Target Pistol | W.A Carver | Muzzle Blasts Archives

We have considered a variety of pistols whereby one might engage in serious pistoling with black powder and 1·ound ball. You have now, perhaps, a good black powder revolver and a single shot pistol such as a Thompson-Center Patriot Pistol or a Kentucky style pistol made from a kit.

Thoughts on building a Single Shot Muzzle Loading Pistol | W.A Carver | Muzzle Blasts Archives

Having given some thought to the advantages and loading of a single shot pistol, some considerations on the building of such a pistol seem in order. Perhaps two approaches to the subject would be useful, building a pistol from a kit, keeping in mind what would make the finished piece suitable to serious shooting, and building a pistol which is altogether a target pistol.
