Building an East Tennessee Powder Horn
Building an East Tennessee Powder Horn
with Henry Bowman
8:00 a.m. Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, 2025
In this 2-day class, students will learn an overview of powder horn history and detailed fundamental skills of powder horn making that are applicable to contemporary and traditional work. Students will build their very own powder horn based upon an early Tennessee original.
This year's project is based upon a documented extant original found in Jonesborough, TN, the former capital of the State of Franklin, with a Bean rifle. This is a banded powder horn with a pinned tip and antler powder measure. Class includes brief introduction to common engraving techniques and faux aging. Students will also receive a comprehensive history and evolution of powder horns.
This class will consist of two ~8-hour days, and is limited to four students. First come, first served. A reserve list of students will be maintained. Alternate students will be called in the order in which they signed up.
